Tower’s Dedicated Cardiothoracic Imaging Radiologists

State of the Art Cardiac Imaging Now Available at Tower

It is an exciting time at Tower Radiology Centers. Tower now offers state of the art Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Cardiac MRI). Cardiac MRI is a robust imaging modality - a "problem solver" that is tailored on a case-by-case basis to help our clinicians and surgeons answer specific questions about the cardiovascular system.  These can include: myocardial viability, cardiomyopathy, cardiac-pericardial masses, constriction, myocarditis, and more.

Cardiac MRI is considered the "gold standard" for the evaluation of cardiac function. It’s high temporal resolution and excellent tissue contrast allows the most accurate quantification of right and left ventricular volumes and function. It is important to mention that unlike echocardiography, Cardiac MRI is not limited by the patient’s body habitus and evaluates the entirety of the heart (right side chambers, left ventricular apex, etc) in every case. Unlike CT, Cardiac MRI can be used in serial follow-up of patients with cardiac dysfunction to assess disease progression or response to medical treatment without reservations related to the use of ionizing radiation.

The value of Cardiac MRI doesn’t stop there. It can also help determine the etiology of cardiac dysfunction in patients with cardiomyopathy, myocarditis, and infiltrative diseases (i.e amyloid, sarcoid), to mention a few. Furthermore, Cardiac MRI can evaluate accurately the myocardial thickness and mass, as well as the presence of scarring in patients’ with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). Cardiac MRI is critical for the assessment of minor or major criteria in patients with clinical concern for Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC).

To the benefit of Electrophysiologists, Cardiac MRI can perform pulmonary vein imaging for pre-procedural mapping and post-procedural follow-up without the use of ionizing radiation. Furthermore, it can help locate scarring in patients with ventricular arrhythmias prior to isolation. In ischemic heart disease, CMR is considered the gold-standard to evaluate for myocardial viability. Not only does Cardiac MRI detect the presence of scarring (non-viable myocardium), but also it has the unique ability to predict the likelihood of functional recovery after re-vascularization based on the transmural extent of scarring.  Cardiac MRI is also ideal for patients with congenital heart disease, in which anatomical information and valvular flow assessments are crucial.  Cardiac MRI allows for extremely accurate quantification of flow volumes and of flow velocities, even in obese patients.

In all, Cardiac MRI is an extremely reliable modality of cardiac imaging.  It is a tool of tremendous value in the assessment of patients with a wide range of cardiac diseases.  The image acquisition, processing, and interpretation of Cardiac MRI require a dedicated and well-trained team.  It is with great enthusiasm that Tower Radiology Centers now offers this cutting-edge CMR service lead by our dedicated cardiac MRI experts.
